The Bob and Maggie Green Youth Adventure Program also known as YAP gives over 60 middle school-aged youth in Chittenden County the opportunity to escape the urban routine and experience fun, adventurous activities by accessing the wonders of Vermont. Through a series of organized outdoor activities, youth are empowered to build their confidence, find new hobbies, develop new friendships outside of their typical social structure, and challenge themselves to reach new goals. Most youth would be unable to experience activities due to financial reasons, therefore YAP is offered at no cost to participants.
The 2018 YAP schedule is as follows (and can also be found in this downloadable document: Hunt Summer Program Schedule 2018
These afternoon sessions start June 25th and end August 3, and run Monday – Friday, 12:30 – 5:00 PM. Each participant will be given a ride home at the end of the program day.
Week 1: June 25-29 HIDDEN BURLINGTON WEEK starts off with explorations of little known gems hidden right here in our own back yard. One day will be filled with hiking; another has biking, there is a third day with swimming, and a day dedicated to some of the unique and fun places to see in Burlington. The week will end with a kayak trip on the Winooski River.
Week 2: July 2-6 (No program on July 4th) BIKE WEEK has youth exploring the different bike trails in and around Vermont. The group will be riding on the Island Line Bike Trail, taking a bike ferry to South Hero, winding through the beautiful Stowe Bike Path, checking out the Green Mountains near Jeffersonville, and ending the week with another kayaking adventure.
Week 3: July 9-13 EXPLORE VERMONT WEEK leads the group through an exploration of the more iconic locations Vermont has to offer. From berry picking, to touring the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory (which includes samples) to checking out the wildlife along beautiful Lake Champlain, to another kayaking trip–this week is full of fun and exciting experiences.
Week 4: July 16-20 HIKE VERMONT WEEK starts off with a relatively easy hike close to home, and then branches out to hike up and around our Green Mountain state mountains and peaks, allowing hikers to witness some of the most amazing views possible. Each day hikers will end the day with a cold, refreshing treat!
Week 5: July 23-27 WATER ADVENTURE WEEK will lead participants to amazing water holes, ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams–the plan is to visit the very best of them. There will be a certified lifeguard on staff, so we will have a fun, safe and wet adventure every day.
Week 6: July 30-Aug 3 OVERNIGHT CAMPING WEEK brings a group of youth together with staff to camp for three days and two nights at one of Vermont’s beautiful state parks. All of the meals will be prepared and cooked together around the campfire. There will be fun games, swimming in a lake, hiking up to fire tower, and creating lots of memorable experiences.
